In 1921, the American Legion Post fired a Civil War cannon and set off fireworks to celebrate the Fourth of July. Although the cannon was turned in for scrap at the beginning of WWII, the American Legion has continued with the fireworks on the Fourth of July. At nearly ninety years, arguably the longest run of Fourth of July fireworks display in Illinois, the dazzling fireworks are now the culmination of a four day celebration in Central Park with a carnival, parades, food, and fun.
